Spring Checklist






This list is intended to be a guide to the most common chores faced by homeowners in the spring. Most are common sense, some you may not consider routine...but all are designed to make your summer easier. Who doesn't enjoy kicking-back and drinking ice cold lemonade on a hot summer day? We recommend printing this list for use around the house.


__Wash windows

__Turn on garden hose spigot

__Remove storm windows and install screens

__Test air-conditioning

__Clean or replace air-conditioning filter

__Turn off humidifier



__Remove storm windows and install screens

__Wash windows

__Check central-air unit for debris and clean

__Caulk or fill any areas where insects may enter the house

__Hook up garden hose, check for leaks

__Wash siding

__Clean gutters and downspouts, check for leaks and cracks

__Trim bushes and trees away from house

__Install window air-conditioning units

__Clean and organize garage

__Check house for peeling paint, cracks in brick/ masonry, future roof problems. Fix if needed

__Dust perimeter of house for ants

__Check decks and other free-standing structures for winter damage and settling/ heaving

__Test outdoor lights and replace bulbs as needed



__Rake/ de-thatch lawn

__Airate lawn

__Fertilize/ weed and feed lawn

__Apply insect control to lawn

__Check trees and other landscaping for winter damage, prune as needed

__Check drainage ditches and drain tiles for large obstructions

__Clean lawn furniture/ check for cracks or other problems

__Check yard for large depressions or heaving, may indicate drainage problems

__Check fencing for problems, repair if needed

__Check for and repair any driveway cracks

__Reseal asphalt driveways



__Change oil

__Check coolant level and strength

__Clean salt/ sand from under carriage of car

__Check tire pressure

__Clean and wax exterior

__Clean and shampoo interior

__Check body for rust

__Check other fluids in car


Lawn Equipment:

__Change oil if applicable

__Replace sparkplugs (strongly recommended)

__Clean all debris from motor and deck. De-grease if needed

__Check all cables and levers for wear and proper functioning

__Check belts for wear and replace if needed

__Charge battery if applicable

__ Put in fresh gasoline

__Run machine for 10 minutes or until blue-black smoke disappears

__Check tires for proper inflation

__Sharpen blades as needed

__Run snowblower out of gas, wash salt off, spray moving parts with light oil and store (see storage of lawn equipment for more information)



__Prepare soil for planting

__Add compost if needed

__Plant cold-crop vegetables

__Dig new gardens before soil becomes too dry and compacted

__Have soil tested (done free by many stores and agricultural centers)


Swimming Pool:

__Remove debris from cover

__Pump/ drain cover

__Check exposed plumbing for cracks and holes from freezing

__Replace sand in filter if needed or applicable

__Check pump motor and oil if access for oil is provided

__Check exposed seals and gaskets, replace if necessary

__Do any other preparation possible now before it's time to open pool
